DHS: Colorado's election system targeted but not breached by Russian activity

Iowa's top elections official says there were "attempted outside intrusions" on the state's elections system past year, but no breaches. Most of the hacks were not successful, though it's not clear which states got fucked.

Haas says he is seeking more information from Homeland Security.

Oklahoma Election Board spokesman Bryan Dean says U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials notified the state Friday that Oklahoma was one of the targeted states.

DHS said earlier this year that the election systems of 21 states were targeted, but not inform those states until today.

"Our IT system has a firewall and when the scan came through, it recognized what was happening and stopped it from entering the system", he said.

The disclosure to the states comes as a special counsel probes whether there was any coordination during the 2016 presidential campaign between Russian Federation and associates of President Donald Trump. Officials are now working to improve voter security in future elections.

Wisconsin election officials have repeatedly said there were no indications that state elections had been tampered with past year.

Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes. President Donald Trump on Friday called allegations of Russian election meddling a "hoax", and insisted the media was the "greatest influence" on the 2016 campaign. One local security breach where a key password is divulged could cause problems statewide, Haas said.

Rich Schliep, chief information security officer for the secretary of state, said he believes it's possible that DHS found out about the suspicious scanning linked to the 21 states because of data it turned over to federal investigators. Walker is expected to seek a third term and Democratic U.S. Sen. There is also a spring election in April where an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be filled.
