Seattle, Russell Wilson snatch victory from 49ers

Posted September 19, 2017

The Seattle Seahawks ground game is averaging 90 yards per contest, and Wilson leads the way with 40 yards on two carries.

The drive, and the one that followed to close out the game, may represent the fig leaf with which the offense uses to cover itself after a second consecutive embarrassment.

A scrambling Russell Wilson threw a 9-yard TD pass to Paul Richardson with just over 7 minutes remaining in the game Sunday to give the Seahawks a 12-9 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field.

On an afternoon when Seahawks coach Pete Carroll groused about his receivers' inability to hang on to the football, the most important drop came off the hands of a 49ers receiver. "We just need to keep doing it; keep chopping wood is really what it takes".

The Seattle Seahawks were looking to bounce back in a big way from their loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, and Week 2 looked like the ideal way to do it as they traveled home to play the San Francisco 49ers in their own stadium. "I'm extremely disappointed", 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "And that was disappointing".

With running back Thomas Rawls expected to return to the field Sunday, the Seahawks will look to improve on establishing the run after last week's performance.

While safety Earl Thomas had some choice things to say about the Seattle offense last week, the defensive players weren't pointing any fingers after the latest loss. "We got a little sloppy in the third quarter, for whatever reason, but we found our way".

The 49ers' defense got a lot of work on Sunday, and now it must bounce back on a short week to face the Los Angeles Rams. Thankfully a rushing defense that ranked last in the league past year looks to have improved and allowed only 116 yards on the ground in the opener.

But the 49ers still appear as beatable, if not also as bendable, as any team on the Seahawks' schedule, having lost 18 of their past 21 games and a year ago setting team records for defensive futility. "We're both 0-1, and somebody is going to be 0-2", 49ers strong safety Eric Reid told reporters. "We expect that no matter what's going on the other side of the ball". The Seahawks have won seven straight, their longest streak in the series including a 23-17 playoff win in January, 2014.

At halftime, he was 8 of 14 for 47 yards with the interception, a third-down sack and a 33.9 passer rating.

"It comes down to getting it done in the moment of truth", Shanahan said.

But the Niners passing game was ineffective.

San Francisco took the lead on a 34-yard field goal with 11:36 left in the fourth quarter after a 54-yard drive all on carries by Hyde and Matt Breida.

Hoyer struggles, again After a dud in his Week 1 debut, Hoyer struggled in his first-ever appearance in Seattle. But in a bit of foreshadowing, it ended with a 25-yard Blair Walsh field goal.

Watson struggled through his first ever start in the National Football League, however, he did produce the only moment that really mattered in the game as he ran for a 49 yard touchdown after breaking free from the Bengals defense.
