Swimming: I got schooled, says Joseph Schooling

Posted July 31, 2017

The 20-year-old had previously won individual gold medals in the men's 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, as well as in the men's 4x100m freestyle, 4x100m mixed freestyle and 4x100m mixed medley relays. There's no other way to say that.

Victories in the men's 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly, then with the US team in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, leaves him with six golds in Budapest.

The relay time shaved more than three seconds off the previous record the United States team set two years ago in Kazan.

In her second race of the tournament, Comerford helped set a world record as part of the 400 mixed-medley relay team, which logged a time of 3:40.28 in Wednesday's prelims.

"It's definitely annoying finishing 18th for the third time in a row, but you know this is not my main event so I was more disappointed finishing 18th in the 200 fly than here but it's over". Mixed relays, with men and women on the same team, are a new event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Schooling himself acknowledged the budding rivalry after the final, saying: "Everyone needs someone who will push you to go faster".

Australia's quiet world championship was overturned by defending champion Emily Seebohm in the women's 200m backstroke. "He had a 50m free final just before that". He said, "It's back to the drawing board, see how things are going and guess I will be supporting Jo all the way".

Nonetheless, he said he was "glad to get a medal at least".

He finished 30th overall in the 50m backstroke heats, his fifth event of the eight-day meet.

Improvement will be foremost in Schooling's thoughts, as will his pursuit of Phelps' world record, when he returns to Singapore this week to prepare for the biennial Games in Kuala Lumpur.

"Because Caeleb is racing 50m, 100m, 200m free, 50m and 100m fly plus relays".

Dressel's win in the 100m butterfly means he also becomes the first swimmer in history to have won both that event and the 100m freestyle at the same edition of the World Championships.

As with all his previous medals, Schooling will hand over this one to his parents to store in his father's office cabinet. He has six gold medals through the week thus far.

The 20-year-old University of Florida student won his seventh gold medal at World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday - tying him with Michael Phelps for most golds at the meet.

Local favourite Kristof Milak, 17, took silver with a new world junior record time of 50.62sec.
