Doom's 6.66 update makes all DLC free and revises multiplayer progression

Posted July 20, 2017

The aptly titled "Update 6.66" brings a host of changes to the popular shooter, in addition to a bunch of bug fixes. As noted by Bethesda, this is on top of modes and features that players have already been enjoying like bot support.

To accommodate this change, everyone's level will be reset to zero, but players won't lose any of the goods they've unlocked - not unless they want to anyway.

The update will also introduce a brand new multiplayer progression system that will replace the previous random unlock scheme with a system that unlocks equipment when hitting specific levels. Now, if there's a specific helmet you want, you can work toward unlocking it by focusing your play style on the related challenge.

The new progression system changes how players unlock demons, guns, equipment, and even customisation options. Similar to its campaign, multiplayer Runes are persistent player abilities earned and included in a player loadout. The new death screen will list out the combination of players, weapon types and damage inflicted. Starting tomorrow, July 20, and running through July 24, you can jump into the game for free with a Gold subscription.

"All veteran players will have the option to completely reset their unlock progression items and experience the new progression system fresh, OR retain all of their existing guns, equipment, demons and customization unlocks that they've acquired or purchased and then unlock the remaining items through the revised progression system".

To finish it all off, Bethesda will also be hosting a Doom free weekend beginning July 20 on the Xbox One and PC, with a PlayStation 4 free weekend following on July 27.

The free weekend is a great time to get hands on with one of the biggest games of 2016. If you like what you play during the Free Weekend, we're offering the full game for $14.99 (US) / £11.99 (UK) / $17.99 (AUS) (digital purchase only). If you are interested in DOOM, but not sold on this fast paced game yet, there will be a free weekend held across all platforms.

Players can try out the first two levels of the campaign and the arcade mode in higher difficulty, and they will have unlimited access to the multiplayer and SnapMap modes.
