Plane crashes on motorway near Los Angeles

IRVINE (CBS) - CBS in Los Angeles is reporting that a plane has crash landed on the Interstate 405 freeway in Irvine.

The plane crashed short of the airport runway, Gregor said.

A fire official says a plane that crashed on a Southern California freeway clipped a vehicle as it crashed but the driver wasn't seriously injured. Debris was all over the freeway, and bystanders could be seen stopping to help two people, at least one of whom was lying on the freeway pavement.

The Cessna 310's wreckage was on the southbound freeway near the MacArthur Boulevard exit.

Kurtz said the wreckage will stay right where it is until an investigation by federal authorities is completed. Witness Cassie Corsaro said immediately after the crash, she saw bystanders rush to the scene. According to records, the last time this plane was in the air was Thursday when it flew from John Wayne to Ontario, then back to John Wayne.

Video posted on social media showed the plane completely engulfed in flames and strewn across several lanes of the freeway.

The people aboard the plane suffered traumatic injuries, according to ABC News. "He says, 'Mayday!' From that point on the air traffic controller very calmly takes over", Madison said.

The crash, involving a twin-engine Cessna 310, temporarily shut down both directions of the 405 Freeway.
