Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

In the hours after the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, a picture began to emerge of an attacker with a mostly minor arrest record who worked as a home inspector and despised the Republican Party. And Walsh said he was surprised that Hodgkinson was the shooter because he knew Hodgkinson as a happy-go-lucky guy, someone who was a jokester at parties.

Hodgkinson, who had been married to her husband for nearly 30 years, said he had "made preparations to leave" by "selling nearly everything he owned from his business".

"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Mrs. Hodgkinson says she was at work when she first heard the news.

According to Former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, he thought Hodgkinson was homeless being that he wore the same clothes every day and appeared to be living out of his gym bag, The Advocate notes. "I think it's bad", Reis said.

Hodgkinson told the YMCA on Tuesday that he wanted to cancel his membership because he was moving, the YMCA said in a statement.

Sanders issued a two-paragraph statement on the shooting and read it almost verbatim on the Senate floor. When that woman's boyfriend confronted Hodgkinson, he struck him in the face with a shotgun before firing off a round as the man fled, a police report said. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", Trump said. A former congressional aide was hospitalized.

Hodgkinson's attack shocked those who knew him as a popular and "laid-back" blue-collar worker in his hometown of Belleville, Illinois. Hodgkinson had been in the Virginia area since March.

"The assailant has now died from his injuries", Trump said in comments about the shooting. He always drank Budweiser from a can and drank alone, barely speaking to anyone, including the bartenders.

"I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it", she said with difficulty, through tears. "Nothing I can really put my finger on, but he was just not a pleasant person".

Meanwhile, Congress is getting back to business today.

His Facebook page shows he was a fan of Vermont Sen. James T. Hodgkinson, 66, was a self-described Democratic Socialist and Bernie Sanders volunteer who was very plugged into Democrat politics.

He also wrote a slew of letters to the editor of his local paper, the Belleville News-Democrat.

But Hodgkinson also suggested to the mechanic that he was planning to head back to IL; he asked whether the newly inflated tires would be able to carry him back to the Midwest.
