Apple reveals watchOS 4: Siri-powered updates, fitness syncing, and music playlists

Posted June 06, 2017

Our Apple Watch is pretty much the only reason why we ever do anything that even resembles exercise, and it's getting even more fitness features in watchOS 4.

Health developers say this is a promising sign that Apple will open up new pathways for them to create their own interchangeable watch bands laden with health sensors. In the demonstration shown by Apple this week, the Apple Watch attained information from gym equipment using NFC. The face automatically displays all the info that's most pertinent to you using machine learning, so it can adjust to your usage patterns and settings to provide the most applicable info depending on the time of day. There's also new faces based on the hit Toy Story franchise which includes faces with Buzz, Woody, and Jessie. Apple Watch-enabled fitness equipment will be coming this fall, too.

Person to person payments, which was also demonstrated in the recent iOS 11 announcement, will also make its way to watchOS 4, allowing users to transfer money to friends and family in a way that resembles the iMessage app. One of the biggest updates - or at least the most visible - here are to be found on watch faces. Fitness maniacs will now be able to track HIIT (High-intensity interval training) as they please.

Apple has announced the latest version of the WatchOS operating system. Simply put, Apple is riffing on Siri and the Apple Watch just like Amazon and Google talk about Alexa and Google Assistant, respectively.

The Music app on Apple Watch has been redesigned. Now you'll be able to tap a new flashlight icon in the Control Center to turn your watch face into a digital torch, letting you see or be seen in dark places.

To improve the AirPods experience, watchOS4 delivers an updated Music app, in addition to Apple News and a new way to switch between recently used apps. You can also cycle through multiple workout types in a single session.

WatchOS 4 will be made available this fall as a free update. WatchOS 4 will also support native core Bluetooth. Furthermore, gym equipment manufacturers will be supporting this in the future as well. Apple's more than 100,000 employees are dedicated to making the best products on earth, and to leaving the world better than we found it. Instant playlists will get played and they can be toggled by swiping left on the active Workout page.
